CARBON LODGE NO. 16, F&AM
NEWSLETTER – May 2012
As of June we will be more than half way through the Masonic year.
We currently have one young brother who is being mentored by a Past Master and is learning the Entered Apprentice degree
catechism. We also have initiated a man who is retired. We welcome
him to Carbon Lodge and look forward to conferring the Fellow Craft
degree on him.
Recently, we held a Table Lodge at the Temple that was an enjoyable
event for the brothers of
both lodges in Price. We are considering the possibility of a BBQ or
dinner during the early summer months for members and their immediate family.
Thursday, May 10th Brothers Lindseth and Gigilotti were at the Holiday Inn for the first meet-up group in Price.
The purpose of this informal and voluntary get together is to answer appropriate
questions a man may have about Masonry. Sometimes we assume that we are well
known in our small community.
However, not everyone knows we exist or why we belong to the Masons.
An example is the following.
Once a repairman came to the Temple to do some work. He asked me,“What is this building used
for?” When I told him the Masons met there he asked, “What do they do?” I think we may need to
become more proactive in letting men know we exist and why we belong to the Masons. If you have
friends, family members, or acquaintances don’t be afraid to express your love and enthusiasm for the Fraternity.
Don’t be afraid to answer appropriate questions about Masonry.
The upkeep of the Temple continues to be a concern. As most of you are aware the Temple was built
during an era of cheap energy. It was not designed to be energy efficient. I am told that when coal was
used the Masons often got the coal for free. The days of cheap energy have passed. During cold months
our gas bill is quite high. Several members have suggested that we close down the upper lodge room and insulate and upgrade the original first floor lodge room and use it for meetings. In fact, Carbon Lodge recently voted to use the lower lodge room.
To help with the cost of maintaining the Temple we now rent any part of the Temple except the upper lodge room to appropriate individuals and organizations for such events as weddings, graduation parties, seminars, etc. While we are hopeful that this will bring in some revenue we recognize we may be
in competition with organizations that can offer their facilities for free or that may be more accessible and
designed for such events.
If you have suggestions as to how we could cut the cost of maintaining the Temple we would like to hear from you.
We are especially grateful for our out–of–town brothers. Your continuing interest and support is vital for the welfare of Masonry in Price. You can’t imagine how many times I have heard appreciation e xpressed for our out–of–town brothers who continue to love and support their Lodge even though they cannot attend meetings.
We apologize for not sending frequent communications to you by US Mail, but we are trying to cut costs
whenever we can. If we don’t have your email address, please send it to us so we can communicate with you in a fast and cost effective manner. Please note that newsletters are also on our website.
This year I have asked our Chaplain, Brother Al Lindseth, to be especially vigilant in identifying and contacting members who may be sick or in distress. I have asked him to make personal visits if possible. I am pleased to report that he has already begun to do this. If you are sick or are in distress
or know of anyone who is, please let us know.
In July, during International Days we will have our Grand Lodge visitation. The lodges and related Masonic organizations usually participate in the annual International Days parade. It won’t be long before we adjourn for the summer.
I wish all of you the Lord’s choicest blessings.
Fraternally,
Joseph DiLorenzo
Worshipful Master

How do I Join? How do I become a Freemason?…Ask!
For a Fraternity steeped in over four hundred years of tradition, you might think it is difficult to become a Mason. It is. There is one major hurdle each candidate must pass. They must ask.
(2B1ASK1)
Freemasonry in Utah accepts no one for membership unless they come of their own free will and accord. There are few other requirements.
You must:
* Be a man, (eighteen or older).
* Believe in a Supreme Being.
* Have a Mason who has known you for at least 6 months sign your petition.
* Live an ethical and moral life.
* Have a strong interest in the Fraternity and desire to participate in its charities and its activities.
We believe that men are first made Masons in their hearts, then they ask to join our Fraternity. Freemasonry will take these men - good men in their communities - and help them become better men.
If by chance you don’t know any Masons personally who can sign your petition, there is certainly a way around it. We can set up a meeting with you, usually in some casual setting, and get to know each other. Then after 6 months, we will be able to sign a petition.
To obtain a petition. Go to Grand Lodge of Utah and navigate to the “About Freemasonry” site to download the petition.

*Note * According to Carbon Lodge No. 16 by-laws, both recommenders must have known the petitioner for six months and both must be Master Masons in good standing from Carbon Lodge No. 16
